Advocating for You and Your Neuroscience Patients

Through the leadership of AANN’s Advocacy Committee, AANN seeks to make your voice heard—advocating for the interests of neuroscience nurses and thus improving care and health outcomes for neuroscience patients and their families.

Publications

AANN provides legislative and advocacy tools to assist members with education and participation in the policy arena.

Advocacy Tool Kit

The purpose of the advocacy tool kit is to educate, inform, and encourage people interested in healthcare issues to become knowledgeable about the legislative process and become involved in health policy advocacy. Tri-Board Advocacy Grid

The AANN, ABNN, and AMWF (Tri-Board) Boards have made advocacy their focus for 2021. The Boards convened a task force to put together an advocacy grid nurses can use as a tool to advocate for yourself, advocate for your patient, and advocate for your profession. The grid outlines the resources available from AANN, ABNN, and AMWF and includes links to the resources.

Initiatives and Activities

AANN partners with other organizations to provide members with the most current and relevant information.

Choosing Wisely- Twenty-Five Things Nurses and Patients Should Question

Choosing Wisely® is an initiative of the ABIM Foundation and Consumer Reports to encourage conversations between patients and clinicians about what care is genuinely necessary. The Academy was among the first non-physician organizations to release recommendations. It leads the nursing profession’s efforts in the Choosing Wisely® campaign through its task force composed of Academy fellows who are leaders of many national nursing organizations including AANN. The AANN recommendations have been endorsed by the Academy Choosing Wisely® Task Force.

The Academy’s list of “Twenty-Five Things Nurses and Patients Should Question,” includes items which are specifically relevant to patients undergoing neuroscience care, and will aid them and their families in choosing care that is supported by evidence, is not duplicative of other tests or procedures already received, is free from harm, and is truly necessary. The full list may be found at www.aannet.org/choosing-wisely or click here to download a PDF.

The Nursing Community

AANN has decided to participate in The Nursing Community, a forum for national professional nursing associations to build consensus and advocate on a wide spectrum of healthcare and nursing issues, including practice, education, and research. This collaboration helps AANN address nursing issues.

Started in 2002 to help unify the voice of the profession on Capitol Hill, The Nursing Community has determined the funding request level for Title VII Nursing Workforce Development programs. Collectively, The Nursing Community is composed of 62 national nursing organizations that represent nearly one million practicing nurses, nursing students, and nursing faculty. Advocacy Committee

Policy Statement

AANN is committed to influencing legislation and public policy that advance neuroscience nursing as a specialty and excellence in patient care.

Scope

As the AANN defines the scope of its advocacy work, legislative and regulatory advocacy can include working on its own or in coalition on the development of policy statements on specific issues, educating or lobbying (i.e., making direct appeals to) policymakers on specific issues or proposals, endorsing or commenting on legislative or regulatory proposals or guideline statements, activating members to comment on a policy proposal, or tracking legislation and votes.

Purpose

Develop and implement the advocacy program that will allow AANN to respond to various endorsements and initiatives by following a systematic process to prioritize requests while defining advocacy activities that will be compatible with the mission, vision, and strategic direction of the association.

AANN Diversity and Inclusion Statement

The AANN represents a diverse population of nurses pursuing excellence in neuroscience practice. Our organization is strengthened by our support of members regardless of race, ethnicity, gender, gender identity, religion, age, sexual orientation, disability or life experiences. It is through inclusion that we foster and respect the diverse ideas, opinions and thoughts that will ensure that the AANN will continue to excel, innovate and encourage learning and leadership. Embracing and celebrating our differences through diversity and inclusion ensures an environment of respect and engagement that will contribute to the growth and viability of AANN organization.

Diversity and Inclusion Committee

The AANN 2015 Strategic Plan identified diversity and inclusiveness as a key initiative. To further focus on the development and implementation, a Task Force was created in 2017. The Task Force created a charter that included the following:

Goal Statement: AANN will remain relevant and effective by ensuring every aspect of the association is a representation of the diverse members it serves.
Project Vision: AANN will develop a comprehensive framework that embraces, fosters and serves as a model for acceptance and inclusiveness.
Benefits:
• A more diverse association will enhance organizational success
• Supporting diversity and inclusion will embrace new members, nurtures new knowledge, ideas and perspectives.
• Diversity and inclusion will promote AANN’s organizational health and flexibility
